Short Hills is an unincorporated community and census-designated place located within Millburn Township, in Essex County, New Jersey.

Short Hills residents enjoy quiet streets, local parks, and a strong sense of community, with active local organizations and events that cater to families and residents, and its local school district - Millburn Township Public Schools - is extremely well regarded.

Renowned for its affluence and exclusivity, it is one of the wealthiest communities in the state. The area boasts stately homes, manicured lawns, and an abundance of trees, contributing to its picturesque suburban landscape.

Short Hills also features a popular upscale shopping mall, the Mall at Short Hills, which offers a variety of luxury retailers and dining options. The community is well-connected to highways and NJ Transit's Short Hills Station, with convenient access to New York City, making it a popular choice for commuters.

The Millburn Recreation Department, and thus Short Hill's, offers a broad range of facilities, parks and programs. A public pool, tennis and pickleball courts, a Par 3 golf course and much more are available to residents.

Parents and children will absolutely love the Turtleback Zoo nearby, which is a vastly underrated zoo by any standards. Essex County has done a remarkable job of slowly updating and expanding the facilities and the animals that call it home. Kids of all ages will enjoy the Tree Top Adventure Course, which includes a zip line.

The Millburn Free Public Library provides all kinds of programs for Millburn-Short Hills residents, including kids, teens and adults. For example, the library hosts a winter reading challenge for all age groups. Renovations to the library will continue in 2025, which will make it an even more appealing facility for residents and community groups.

South Mountain Reservation, an Essex County Park, Watchung Reservation, and Morristown National Historical Park, which includes Jockey Hollow. Additionally, the Great Swamp Wildlife Refuge is easily accessible from Short Hills.

Local Restaurants

Short Hills offers a diverse dining scene, ranging from upscale to casual eateries. Diners can enjoy a luxurious meal at the high-end restaurant Benihana, known for its Japanese teppanyaki and sushi. For a mid-priced option, The Mall at Short Hills features restaurants like The Cheesecake Factory, which offers an extensive menu with something for everyone. Casual dining experiences can be found at Boxcar Bar & Grill, where guests can enjoy classic American fare in a relaxed setting.
