History of Windsor Locks

By Joshua Wood, LPC

Summary: Whether you're considering moving to Windsor Locks or are already below, here is a short history to help you understand how it has evolved into the place it is today.

Windsor Locks, Connecticut, with its rich history and charming character, is a town that offers a glimpse into the past while providing amenities for modern living. Established in 1633, it was originally part of Windsor, which is considered one of the first English settlements in Connecticut. The town's name, Windsor Locks, comes from a set of canal locks that were built in 1829 to circumvent the Enfield Falls on the Connecticut River. These locks were instrumental in the town's early industrial growth, allowing for navigation and trade.

The arrival of the railroad in the 1840s further spurred Windsor Locks' development, making it a transportation hub. The town was officially incorporated in 1854, separating from Windsor. During the 19th and 20th centuries, Windsor Locks thrived as a manufacturing center, with textiles and paper goods among the primary industries. The Dexter Corporation, founded in Windsor Locks in 1767, was one of the oldest continuously operating companies in the United States until its operations ceased in the town in the late 20th century.

Today, Windsor Locks is known for hosting the Bradley International Airport, which serves as a significant travel gateway for the region. The town maintains its historical charm through well-preserved sites such as the Noden-Reed Park and Museum and the Windsor Locks Canal State Park Trail, which offers scenic walks along the remnants of the old canal. For residents and those considering moving to Windsor Locks, the town provides a unique blend of historical significance and contemporary convenience.
