History of Stirling

By Joshua Wood, LPC

Summary: Whether you're considering moving to Stirling or are already below, here is a short history to help you understand how it has evolved into the place it is today.

Stirling, New Jersey, is a charming small town with a rich history that dates back to the 18th century. Nestled in the Long Hill Township of Morris County, Stirling is named after Lord Stirling, a general under George Washington in the American Revolutionary War. The area was originally inhabited by the Lenape Native Americans before European settlers arrived.

In the 19th century, Stirling became a hub for industry due to the Central Railroad of New Jersey. The railroad provided a vital link for goods and people, contributing to the town's growth. The Stirling Silk Mill, established in the late 1800s, became a significant employer and economic driver for the community.

As the 20th century progressed, Stirling evolved from an industrial center to a suburban community. The post-World War II housing boom saw many new residents moving to the area, attracted by its small-town charm and proximity to New York City. Today, Stirling maintains its historical character while offering modern amenities, making it an attractive place for families and individuals alike.

Residents and potential newcomers can enjoy Stirling's historical sites, such as the beautifully preserved Victorian homes and the Passaic River, which provides scenic beauty and recreational opportunities. The town's commitment to preserving its history while fostering a welcoming community spirit makes Stirling a unique and desirable place to live.
