History of Ridgewood

By Joshua Wood, LPC

Summary: Whether you're considering moving to Ridgewood or are already below, here is a short history to help you understand how it has evolved into the place it is today.

Ridgewood, New Jersey, is a village with a rich history that dates back to the colonial era. The area that is now Ridgewood was originally inhabited by the Lenape Native Americans before Dutch settlers arrived in the 17th century. The Dutch established the settlement within the area known as New Netherland, which included parts of modern-day New York and New Jersey.

In the 18th century, the region was primarily agricultural, with many of the early settlers being Dutch farmers. The area was known for its fertile soil and became a hub for growing produce that was then sold in nearby New York City. The village itself was not officially formed until 1894 when it separated from Ridgewood Township.

The arrival of the railroad in the 19th century transformed Ridgewood into a suburban community. The train provided an easy commute to New York City, attracting affluent professionals who built grand Victorian homes, many of which still stand today. The village's downtown area also began to develop during this time, with the construction of shops, businesses, and civic buildings.

Throughout the 20th century, Ridgewood continued to grow and modernize while maintaining its historic charm. Today, it is known for its excellent schools, vibrant downtown, and strong community spirit. Its history is preserved in the Ridgewood Historic District, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, ensuring that the village's past will continue to be an integral part of its future.

For those living in or considering a move to Ridgewood, the village offers a unique blend of historical significance and contemporary living, making it a desirable location for families and individuals alike.
