History of Pound Ridge

By Betsy Burlingame

Summary: Here is a brief history of Pound Ridge for both residents, viistors, or anyone considering moving there.

Pound Ridge, a town with a rich history nestled in the northeast corner of Westchester County, New York, has long been a haven for those seeking a peaceful, rural lifestyle close to the hustle and bustle of New York City. The town's origins date back to the 17th century when it was originally settled by Native Americans. The name "Pound Ridge" is believed to have been derived from an Anglicization of the Native American word "compounce," which referred to a fenced-in area for animals.

In the 18th century, the area was settled by English and Dutch colonists. During the Revolutionary War, Pound Ridge was the site of a skirmish known as the Battle of Pound Ridge, where British forces led by Banastre Tarleton raided the town. The town's landscape still bears the marks of its early history, with numerous stone walls and colonial-era homes dotting the area.

Throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries, Pound Ridge remained largely agricultural. However, the town began to change in the mid-20th century as artists, writers, and professionals from New York City discovered its rustic charm. This influx of new residents helped to shape the town's unique character, blending rural tranquility with a culturally rich community.

Today, Pound Ridge is known for its beautiful natural surroundings, including the Ward Pound Ridge Reservation, the county's largest park. With a commitment to preserving its historical heritage and natural beauty, Pound Ridge continues to be a desirable destination for those looking to live in a place with a strong sense of community and a touch of country living.
