History of Plandome

By Betsy Burlingame

Summary: A short history of Plandome is provided below for residents and anyone considering moving there.

Located on the North Shore of Long Island, Plandome is a village with a rich history that dates back to the early 20th century. The name "Plandome," which means "plain home" in Latin, reflects the area's original topography and the vision of its developers. Plandome was incorporated as a village in 1911, following a period of significant development that transformed it from farmland into a suburban community.

The Matinecock Native American tribe were the original inhabitants of the area. European settlers, attracted by the fertile land and proximity to Manhasset Bay, began to establish homesteads in the 17th century. Over time, the region evolved from a rural farming community into a desirable location for affluent New Yorkers seeking a country retreat from the city.

In the early 1900s, the arrival of the Long Island Rail Road played a pivotal role in Plandome's development. It provided convenient access to Manhattan, making the village an attractive location for commuters. The planned nature of the community, with its carefully laid out streets and elegant homes, was designed to appeal to the upper-middle-class families of the era.

Today, Plandome maintains its small-town charm and sense of community, while also offering modern amenities and a high quality of life. Its history is preserved in the beautiful architecture and the continued community focus on preserving the natural beauty and residential character of the village. For those living in or considering a move to Plandome, the village's history is a testament to its enduring appeal as a peaceful and picturesque enclave within the bustling Greater New York area.
