History of Plainsboro

Plainsboro, New Jersey, is a township with a rich history that dates back to the 17th century. Originally, the area was inhabited by the Lenni Lenape Native Americans, who were eventually displaced by European settlers. The township itself was officially formed on May 6, 1919, when it was carved out of sections of Cranbury and South Brunswick due to the advocacy of the local residents who wanted better roads and improved public services.

Plainsboro's name is believed to have been derived from the "plains" or "plainsboro" that were observed by the early settlers due to the flat and open land in the region. The area was primarily agricultural, with many farms producing crops and dairy products. The fertile soil and favorable farming conditions helped the community thrive in its early years.

Throughout the 20th century, Plainsboro evolved from a rural farming community into a suburban township. The construction of major roads and highways, such as U.S. Route 1, facilitated easier access to the region and spurred development. In the 1960s and 1970s, residential neighborhoods and commercial areas began to expand significantly.

Today, Plainsboro is known for its excellent schools, diverse population, and beautiful parks, including the notable Plainsboro Preserve. It is also home to the renowned Princeton University Medical Center at Plainsboro, which opened in 2012.
