History of Phillipse Manor

By Betsy Burlingame

Summary: A short history of Phillipse Manor is provided below for residents and anyone considering moving there.

Philipsburg Manor, nestled in the historic Hudson Valley of New York, is a place where the past is palpably present. Established in the 17th century, this sprawling 52,000-acre estate was once the heart of a provisioning plantation that included a mill, a manor house, and various outbuildings. It was owned by the powerful Philipse family, who were among the wealthiest landowners in the colonial New York.

The manor was a hub of activity and commerce, with tenant farmers and enslaved Africans working the land to produce goods for the Atlantic trade. The Philipses were loyalists during the American Revolution, and as a result, their lands were confiscated by the State of New York after the war. The manor house and surrounding property were sold off, marking the end of the Philipses' reign.

Today, Philipsburg Manor is a historic site that offers a window into the lives of both the colonial elite and the enslaved individuals who lived and worked there. It has been restored and is open to the public as a museum. The manor house, water mill, and barns stand as testaments to the complex history of colonial America, slavery, and the struggle for independence.

For those living in or considering a move to the Philipsburg Manor area, the site provides a unique opportunity to connect with America's past. The surrounding community is rich in history and culture, offering residents and visitors alike a chance to explore and learn about the diverse narratives that have shaped the region.
