History of Ossining

By Betsy Burlingame

Summary: Whether you're considering moving to Ossining or are already below, here is a short history to help you understand how it has evolved into the place it is today.

Ossining, a vibrant village in Westchester County, New York, boasts a rich history that dates back to the 17th century. Originally inhabited by the Sint Sinck tribe, the area was purchased by the Dutch in 1685 and was known as "Sing Sing" until 1901, when its name was changed to Ossining to avoid confusion with the infamous Sing Sing Prison.

The village thrived due to its location on the Hudson River, becoming a hub for trade and transportation. In the 19th century, Ossining's economy was bolstered by industries such as manufacturing and agriculture. The construction of the Old Croton Aqueduct in the 1840s, a marvel of engineering at the time, supplied New York City with fresh water and brought additional workers and residents to the area.

Ossining's historical significance is also marked by its commitment to progressive social causes. The Ossining Bank for Savings, established in 1848, was one of the first mutual savings banks in the country. Moreover, the village was an active participant in the Underground Railroad, with several documented safe houses that provided shelter to those escaping slavery.

Today, Ossining is a diverse and dynamic community that celebrates its historical roots while looking towards the future. Its waterfront offers scenic views and recreational opportunities, and the village's architecture, from Victorian homes to the iconic Sing Sing Prison, reflects its storied past. For residents and those considering moving to Ossining, the village's history is a source of pride and a foundation for a thriving, inclusive community.
