History of Ocean Grove

By Betsy Burlingame

Summary: Whether you're considering moving to Ocean Grove or are already below, here is a short history to help you understand how it has evolved into the place it is today.

Ocean Grove, New Jersey, is a coastal community with a rich history that dates back to its founding in 1869. It was established as a camp meeting site by a group of Methodist clergymen who named the area in honor of the ocean and the sacred grove of ancient Israel. The founders envisioned a spiritual retreat where people could gather for worship and relaxation away from the vices of the outside world.

The community quickly became known for its religious camps, revivals, and the Great Auditorium, which was constructed in 1894. This impressive structure has hosted numerous religious and cultural events over the years and remains a central feature of Ocean Grove. The town was laid out with a grid pattern of streets radiating from a central square, known as Auditorium Square, which is where the Great Auditorium is located.

Ocean Grove is also famous for its unique collection of Victorian architecture, which has been meticulously preserved. In 1976, the entire town was entered in the National Register of Historic Places as a historic district, recognizing its significance as a well-preserved example of a 19th-century planned urban community.

Today, Ocean Grove continues to be a family-oriented town, with its beautiful beaches, boardwalk, and quaint downtown area attracting visitors and new residents alike. The community maintains its spiritual heritage through active worship communities and the continuation of traditional events like the annual Camp Meeting Week.

For those considering a move to Ocean Grove, the town offers a peaceful seaside lifestyle steeped in history and community spirit. Its commitment to preserving the charm and character of its past makes it a unique and enchanting place to call home.
