History of Oakdale

By Betsy Burlingame

Summary: It's helpful for people considering moving to Oakdale to understand it's history and how it has developed into the community it is today.

Oakdale, a hamlet within the Town of Islip in Suffolk County, New York, has a rich history that adds to its charm and appeal for residents and potential newcomers. Originally inhabited by the Secatogue tribe, the area was later settled by Europeans in the 17th century. The name "Oakdale" itself is believed to have been inspired by a local tavern named "The Oakdale Tavern" around the mid-19th century, which served as a landmark and meeting place for the community.

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Oakdale became known for its grand estates. The most notable among them was the "Idle Hour" estate, an opulent 900-acre property owned by the famous Vanderbilt family. This estate was a symbol of the Gilded Age, reflecting the wealth and luxury of the era. The mansion was unfortunately destroyed by fire in 1899 but was rebuilt and continued to be a social hub until it was eventually sold and repurposed.

Today, Oakdale is a serene suburban community that retains much of its historical charm. The area is known for its beautiful natural surroundings, including the Connetquot River State Park Preserve, which offers residents and visitors a chance to engage with nature and local wildlife. With a history that blends Native American heritage, European settlement, and the grandeur of America's wealthiest, Oakdale presents a unique and inviting atmosphere for those looking to become a part of its community.
