History of North Caldwell

By Joshua Wood, LPC

Summary: Here is a brief history of North Caldwell for both residents, viistors, or anyone considering moving there.

North Caldwell, a borough in Essex County, New Jersey, is a community with a rich history that dates back to its incorporation on March 31, 1898. The borough was carved out of sections of Caldwell Township, now known as Fairfield Township. Its roots, however, stretch further back to the pre-Revolutionary War era when the area was primarily agricultural land.

Throughout the 19th century, North Caldwell remained a rural community, with many residents involved in farming. The arrival of the Erie Railroad in the neighboring town of Caldwell in the 1890s, however, began to change the landscape, as it allowed for easier access to New York City and other areas, leading to gradual suburbanization.

In the 20th century, North Caldwell transitioned from its agricultural past to a suburban residential community. The borough's population saw significant growth, particularly after World War II, as more people sought homes outside of the city. This growth was managed with a focus on preserving the area's natural beauty and maintaining a low-density, residential character.

Today, North Caldwell is known for its high quality of life, excellent schools, and beautiful homes. It has been featured in popular culture, notably as the setting for the home of Tony Soprano in the acclaimed television series "The Sopranos." Residents and potential newcomers are drawn to its peaceful environment, proximity to urban centers, and its historical charm that continues to define this New Jersey borough.
