History of Malverne

By Betsy Burlingame

Summary: Whether you're considering moving to Malverne or are already below, here is a short history to help you understand how it has evolved into the place it is today.

Malverne, a charming village in Nassau County, Long Island, has a rich history that dates back to the early 20th century. Originally part of the Hempstead Plains, Malverne was initially developed as a suburban community after the arrival of the Long Island Rail Road in 1913. This transportation link to New York City made Malverne an attractive location for those seeking a quieter life away from the bustling city.

The name "Malverne" was adopted in 1913, inspired by Malvern, England, with the addition of an "e" to make it unique. The village was incorporated in 1921, and throughout the 1920s, Malverne saw significant growth with the construction of many Tudor and colonial-style homes, which still characterize the village's aesthetic today.

During the 1920s, Malverne also became known for the Norwood Inn, a popular hotel and restaurant that attracted visitors from across the region. However, the Great Depression slowed the village's growth, and it wasn't until after World War II that Malverne experienced another population boom, as returning veterans sought suburban homes for their families.

Today, Malverne maintains its small-town charm with a tight-knit community, well-preserved residential areas, and a quaint downtown with local shops and businesses. The village hosts annual events that foster community spirit, such as the Malverne Fall Festival and the lighting of the village Christmas tree, which continue to celebrate the rich history and welcoming atmosphere that make Malverne a special place to live.
