History of Long Beach

By Betsy Burlingame

Summary: Here is a brief history of Long Beach for both residents, viistors, or anyone considering moving there.

Long Beach, known as the "City by the Sea," is a city in Nassau County, located on Long Island, New York. Its rich history dates back to the late 19th century when it was developed as a seaside resort. The city was incorporated in 1922, and since then, it has grown into a vibrant community with a diverse population.

The area that is now Long Beach was originally inhabited by the Rockaway Indians. European settlers arrived in the 1600s, but it wasn't until the arrival of businessman William H. Reynolds in the 1900s that Long Beach began to transform. Reynolds, a former state senator and developer, envisioned a luxurious resort community with hotels, boardwalks, and grand homes. He constructed the famous Hotel Nassau in 1907, which marked the beginning of Long Beach's reputation as a holiday destination.

The iconic boardwalk was built in 1914 and has since become a symbol of the city. It was rebuilt after being damaged by Hurricane Sandy in 2012, demonstrating the resilience of the Long Beach community. Over the years, Long Beach has attracted a mix of residents, including professionals, artists, and surfers, drawn by its unique blend of urban and beach lifestyles.

Today, Long Beach is known for its beautiful beaches, active nightlife, and cultural events. It has maintained its small-town feel while offering amenities typically found in larger cities. For those considering moving to Long Beach, the city offers a rich history, strong community spirit, and a quality of life that is hard to match.
