History of Lavalette

By Betsy Burlingame

Summary: Here is a brief history of Lavalette for both residents, viistors, or anyone considering moving there.

Lavallette, New Jersey, is a borough located on the Barnegat Peninsula in Ocean County. Established on December 21, 1887, through an act of the New Jersey Legislature, the borough was named for Elie A. F. La Vallette, one of the first rear admirals appointed in the United States Navy. He is noted for his service in the Mexican-American War and the Civil War, and his family's history is deeply intertwined with the area's development.

The land that would become Lavallette was originally part of Dover Township (now Toms River Township). In the late 19th century, the area was primarily a summer resort community for visitors seeking the tranquility and restorative qualities of the seaside. The construction of the Pennsylvania Railroad's branch line to Bay Head contributed significantly to the area's accessibility and popularity.

Throughout the 20th century, Lavallette continued to grow, transitioning from a summer resort to a residential community. Its beautiful beaches, boardwalk, and family-friendly atmosphere have made it a cherished location for both year-round residents and vacationers. The borough's infrastructure, community services, and local governance have evolved to support a population that appreciates the small-town charm and coastal living.

Today, Lavallette is known for its well-maintained beaches, recreational opportunities, and community events. Despite the challenges posed by events like Superstorm Sandy in 2012, the community has shown resilience and a strong commitment to rebuilding and preserving the character of their beloved borough. For those living in or considering a move to Lavallette, the borough's rich history and enduring appeal as a coastal haven continue to be a source of pride and enjoyment.
