History of Florham Park
Summary: Here is a brief history of Florham Park for both residents, viistors, or anyone considering moving there.
Florham Park, a small suburban community in Morris County, New Jersey, boasts a rich history that dates back to the 17th century. Originally inhabited by the Lenni Lenape Native Americans, the area was later settled by the English Quakers in 1680. The town's name, Florham Park, is derived from the combination of Florence Adele Vanderbilt Twombly and Hamilton McKown Twombly's names, who owned a vast estate in the area during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
The town's evolution from a rural farming community to a suburban residential town began in the early 20th century. The Twombly's estate, known as Florham, was one of the country's finest examples of Gilded Age estates, influencing the town's development. After the estate was broken up and sold in the 1950s, the area saw significant residential growth.
Florham Park became an independent municipality in 1899, separating from Chatham Township. It has since developed a reputation as a peaceful suburban town with a strong sense of community. The borough is known for its excellent schools, beautiful parks, and a family-friendly atmosphere, making it an attractive place for those looking to move to a quiet, yet conveniently located, area.
Today, Florham Park is also recognized as the home of the New York Jets training facility, which opened in 2008, adding a modern touch to the borough's historical charm. Despite its growth and development, Florham Park continues to honor its past, with several historical landmarks still standing, including the Little Red Schoolhouse and the Florham Park Gazebo, which serve as reminders of the borough's storied history.
