History of Edison
Summary: Here is a brief history of Edison for both residents, viistors, or anyone considering moving there.
Edison, New Jersey, is a township with a rich history that dates back to the 17th century. Originally known as "Raritan Township," it was settled by Europeans in 1651. The area was primarily agricultural, with many farms and orchards providing sustenance for its early residents.
During the 19th century, the township began to industrialize, with the arrival of the railroad in 1834 facilitating growth and development. Factories and businesses sprang up, taking advantage of the transportation network and the area's strategic location.
In 1876, the famous inventor Thomas Alva Edison set up his research laboratory in Menlo Park, within the township's boundaries. It was here that Edison invented the phonograph and the incandescent light bulb, earning the township the nickname "The Birthplace of the Modern World." In honor of Edison's impact on modern technology and industry, Raritan Township was renamed Edison Township in 1954.
Today, Edison is a diverse and thriving community, known for its excellent schools, beautiful parks, and convenient location. It's situated in the heart of central New Jersey, with easy access to major highways and public transportation, making it an attractive place for families and businesses alike.
For those living in or considering a move to Edison, the township offers a unique blend of historical significance and modern convenience. Its history is not just a backdrop but a living part of the community that continues to shape its identity.
