History of Deal

By Betsy Burlingame

Summary: Whether you're considering moving to Deal or are already below, here is a short history to help you understand how it has evolved into the place it is today.

Deal, New Jersey, a small borough in Monmouth County, boasts a rich history that dates back to its settlement in the late 1660s. Originally inhabited by the Lenni Lenape Native Americans, the area was later settled by European immigrants, primarily English Quakers and Dutch settlers. The town's name is said to have been inspired by an English town, Deal in Kent, reflecting the origins of some of its early settlers.

Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, Deal was primarily an agricultural community, with its fertile soil yielding abundant crops. However, the late 19th century brought significant change as the area began to transform into a summer retreat for the wealthy. Grand hotels and Victorian homes sprang up, catering to affluent visitors seeking respite from the city heat. The construction of the New Jersey Southern Railroad in 1870 further facilitated this transformation by improving access to the area.

In the 20th century, Deal continued to flourish as a residential community, with its beautiful beaches and serene atmosphere attracting both seasonal and year-round residents. Despite its growth and development, Deal has managed to maintain its small-town charm and exclusivity, with many of its historic homes and estates preserved to this day.

For those living in or considering a move to Deal, the borough's history is a testament to its enduring appeal as a peaceful seaside enclave. Its legacy as a haven for relaxation and its commitment to preserving its unique character continue to define this picturesque community.
