History of Brielle

By Joshua Wood, LPC

Summary: Here is a brief history of Brielle for both residents, viistors, or anyone considering moving there.

Brielle, New Jersey, is a borough located in southern Monmouth County with a rich history that dates back to the 17th century. The area, originally inhabited by the Lenape Native Americans, was first settled by Europeans in 1664 when a group of English colonists arrived. The town's name is believed to be derived from the Dutch city of Brielle, which played a significant role in the Eighty Years' War for Dutch independence.

Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, Brielle developed as a farming community and later as a summer resort destination for visitors seeking the tranquility of the Jersey Shore. The Manasquan River, which borders the borough, became a focal point for fishing and recreational boating, contributing to the local economy and lifestyle.

Incorporated in 1919, Brielle has since evolved into a charming residential community while maintaining its small-town feel and connection to its historical roots. The borough's picturesque setting, with tree-lined streets and beautiful homes, continues to attract those looking for a peaceful place to live or vacation.

Today, Brielle is known for its excellent schools, recreational facilities, and a strong sense of community. Residents and visitors alike enjoy the local marinas, golf courses, and proximity to the Atlantic Ocean beaches. The history of Brielle is celebrated and preserved through local landmarks and the dedication of its residents to maintaining the borough's unique character and heritage.
