History of Bellport

Bellport, New York, is a charming village located on the South Shore of Long Island, known for its picturesque waterfront, historic homes, and tight-knit community. The area that would become Bellport was originally inhabited by the Unkechaug Indians, who called it "Sowassett," meaning "place of the big rock."

In 1664, English settlers arrived, and the land was purchased from the Unkechaug. The village itself was founded in 1829 by Captains Thomas and John Bell, for whom the village was named. They recognized the potential for a seaport and laid out the streets and lots, creating the grid pattern that still exists today. Bellport was formally incorporated as a village in 1910.

Throughout the 19th century, Bellport became a popular summer retreat for wealthy New Yorkers seeking respite from the city. The construction of the South Side Railroad in the 1860s made the village more accessible, further boosting its popularity as a vacation destination. Bellport's economy thrived on shipbuilding, farming, and oystering until the mid-20th century when tourism and residential development became more prominent.

The village is home to the Gateway Playhouse, one of the oldest summer theaters in the United States, and the Bellport-Brookhaven Historical Society, which preserves the area's rich heritage.
