History of Allendale

By Betsy Burlingame

Summary: Whether you're considering moving to Allendale or are already below, here is a short history to help you understand how it has evolved into the place it is today.

Allendale, New Jersey, is a borough with a rich history that dates back to its incorporation on November 8, 1894. Before European settlers arrived, the area was inhabited by Native Americans from the Lenni Lenape tribe, who found the region's forests and streams to be fertile grounds for hunting and fishing.

In the 18th century, European settlers, primarily of Dutch descent, began to establish farms, mills, and homes in the area. The name "Allendale" was suggested by a resident in the late 19th century, inspired by the Allen family, who were prominent figures in the community. The arrival of the Paterson and Ramapo Railroad in 1848 was a significant event, as it connected Allendale to New York City and other towns, fostering economic growth and making it an attractive place to live.

Throughout the 20th century, Allendale evolved from a rural farming community into a suburban borough. Its population grew, especially after World War II, as people sought the tranquility of suburban life. Today, Allendale is known for its excellent schools, beautiful parks, and a small-town feel that continues to draw residents. The Allendale Historical Society actively preserves the borough's history, maintaining landmarks such as the John Fell House, which served as a meeting place for the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War.

For those living in or considering a move to Allendale, the borough's history is a testament to its enduring charm and community spirit. Its historical roots are celebrated in annual events and local traditions, making Allendale not just a place to live, but a place with a story to be part of.
