History of Woodcliff Lake

By Joshua Wood, LPC

Summary: Whether you're considering moving to Woodcliff Lake or are already below, here is a short history to help you understand how it has evolved into the place it is today.

Woodcliff Lake, New Jersey, is a borough with a rich history that dates back to the pre-colonial era. Originally inhabited by the Lenape Native Americans, the area was later settled by Dutch colonists in the 18th century. The name "Woodcliff" is believed to have been derived from the Dutch "Woody Cliff," referring to the area's wooded cliffs and rolling hills.

The borough was officially incorporated on August 31, 1894, from portions of Orvil Township and Washington Township. The coming of the railroad in the 1870s spurred growth in the area, as it became a convenient summer retreat for New York City residents. The Woodcliff Lake Reservoir, completed in 1912, is a central feature of the borough and has been a source of water for the Hackensack Water Company and later United Water.

Throughout the 20th century, Woodcliff Lake transformed from a rural community into a suburban residential town. The construction of the Garden State Parkway in the 1950s further enhanced its accessibility and attractiveness to those looking to move away from the city. Today, Woodcliff Lake is known for its excellent schools, beautiful homes, and a strong sense of community, making it a desirable place for families and individuals seeking a peaceful suburban lifestyle with close proximity to New York City.

Residents and potential newcomers to Woodcliff Lake can appreciate the borough's commitment to preserving its history while looking forward to a future of continued growth and community development.
