History of White Plains

By Joshua Wood, LPC

Summary: It's helpful for people considering moving to White Plains to understand it's history and how it has developed into the community it is today.

White Plains, a city rich in history and culture, is nestled in Westchester County and serves as its seat of government. Its story begins long before European settlers arrived, with the Weckquaeskeck tribe, part of the Mohican confederacy, originally inhabiting the land. The name "White Plains" comes from the extensive meadows that were said to appear white with frost in the fall.

The area's European history started in 1683 when it was purchased from the Native Americans. It quickly became an agricultural hub due to its fertile soil. The city played a pivotal role during the Revolutionary War, particularly during the Battle of White Plains in 1776, which was a key engagement in the fight for independence.

In the 19th century, with the arrival of the railroad, White Plains began to transform from a rural village into a suburban city. The 20th century saw rapid growth as it became a favorite for businesses and residents alike, leading to its incorporation as a city in 1916. The city's downtown area underwent significant redevelopment in the late 20th century, becoming a bustling center for shopping, entertainment, and business.

Today, White Plains is a vibrant community that balances modern amenities with its historical charm. It offers a high quality of life with excellent schools, parks, and a strong economy, making it an attractive place for those looking to relocate. Its residents take pride in their city's past while looking forward to a bright future.
