History of Westport

By Joshua Wood, LPC

Summary: A short history of Westport is provided below for residents and anyone considering moving there.

Westport, Connecticut, with its charming downtown and scenic coastline, has a rich history that dates back to the 17th century. Originally inhabited by the Native American Pequot tribe, the area was first settled by European colonists in 1693 as part of the town of Fairfield. The settlement, which was then known as Bankside Farmers, thrived due to its proximity to the Long Island Sound, which facilitated trade and travel.

By the 18th century, the community had grown significantly, and in 1835, Westport officially separated from Fairfield, Norwalk, and Weston to become an independent town. Its name reflects its western position relative to other ports on the Saugatuck River. The town's economy during this period was largely based on agriculture, onion farming, and maritime activities, including shipbuilding and coastal trade.

The arrival of the railroad in the 19th century transformed Westport into a bustling commercial center and attracted wealthy New Yorkers seeking a country retreat. The town's picturesque landscape inspired many artists and writers, contributing to its reputation as a cultural hub. In the 20th century, Westport continued to draw creative minds and became known for its vibrant arts scene.

Today, Westport is a thriving community that values its historical roots while embracing modernity. Its excellent schools, beautiful beaches, and commitment to the arts make it an attractive place for families and individuals alike. Whether you're a history buff, an art enthusiast, or simply seeking a peaceful coastal town, Westport's storied past and dynamic present offer something for everyone.
