Summary: It's helpful for people considering moving to Westhampton to understand it's history and how it has developed into the community it is today.

Westhampton, a hamlet in the Town of Southampton, Suffolk County, New York, is a place with a rich history that dates back to the pre-colonial era. Originally inhabited by the Algonquin-speaking indigenous people, the area was later settled by English colonists in the 17th century. The name "Westhampton" was adopted, indicating its geographical position relative to other "Hamptons" on Long Island's South Fork.

The development of Westhampton was initially slow, with agriculture and fishing being the mainstays of the local economy. The arrival of the Long Island Rail Road in the 1870s, however, marked a turning point, as it made the area more accessible to visitors and potential residents from New York City. Westhampton began to transform into a summer resort destination, with hotels, inns, and the construction of numerous homes.

The 20th century saw Westhampton continue to flourish as a vacation spot, especially after the construction of the Westhampton Beach in 1928. The community also faced challenges, such as the devastating hurricane of 1938, which reshaped much of the coastline and required significant rebuilding efforts.

Today, Westhampton maintains its charm as a serene and picturesque seaside community, offering residents and visitors alike a blend of historical allure and modern amenities. Its beautiful beaches, cultural events, and quaint village center make it an attractive location for those looking to live in a place with a small-town feel yet close to the vibrancy of New York City.
