History of Westbrook

By Betsy Burlingame

Summary: It's helpful for people considering moving to Westbrook to understand it's history and how it has developed into the community it is today.

Westbrook, Connecticut, is a charming coastal town with a rich history that dates back to the early 1600s. Originally part of the Saybrook Colony, which was established in 1635, Westbrook was known as Pochaug at that time and was inhabited by the Wangunk tribe. European settlers began to arrive and establish homesteads, leading to a gradual transformation of the area.

In 1648, Westbrook became known as West Parish, as it was the western section of Saybrook. It wasn't until 1810 that Westbrook officially separated from Saybrook and incorporated as its own town, named after the Westbrook Division of the Saybrook Colony. The town's location along the Long Island Sound facilitated its growth as a maritime community, with shipbuilding and fishing as primary industries.

Throughout the 19th century, Westbrook evolved into a popular summer resort destination. The arrival of the railroad in 1871 further boosted the town's accessibility and popularity. Visitors were drawn to the beautiful beaches, inns, and the fresh sea air, establishing Westbrook as a quaint seaside retreat.

Today, Westbrook maintains its small-town charm while offering residents and visitors a blend of historical sites, outdoor activities, and community events. The Westbrook Historical Society preserves the town's rich heritage, showcasing artifacts and documents that tell the story of Westbrook's past. For those living in or considering a move to Westbrook, the town's history is a testament to its enduring appeal as a place to call home.
