History of West Orange
Summary: It's helpful for people considering moving to West Orange to understand it's history and how it has developed into the community it is today.
West Orange, New Jersey, is a township with a rich history that dates back to the late 1600s when it was part of the New Jersey colony. Originally inhabited by the Lenape Native Americans, the area was settled by Europeans who were attracted to its fertile land and strategic location.
In 1806, West Orange was officially created from portions of Newark Township and was named in honor of William III of England, who was Prince of Orange. The township grew steadily as a farming community, and by the mid-19th century, it began to attract wealthy residents who built grand estates.
The most notable resident was the inventor Thomas Edison, who moved to West Orange in 1886. Edison's presence in the township led to the establishment of his main laboratory, where he developed groundbreaking inventions such as the motion picture camera and the improved phonograph. The Edison National Historic Site, now the Thomas Edison National Historical Park, preserves his laboratory and estate, Glenmont, as a tribute to his genius.
Throughout the 20th century, West Orange continued to evolve, transitioning from rural farmland to a suburban community. It became known for its diverse population, excellent schools, and recreational facilities, including the South Mountain Reservation and the Essex County Country Club.
Today, West Orange is a vibrant township that offers a mix of residential neighborhoods, historical sites, and modern amenities. Its rich history and community spirit make it an attractive place for residents and those considering making it their home.
