History of West Hempstead

By Betsy Burlingame

Summary: Here is a brief history of West Hempstead for both residents, viistors, or anyone considering moving there.

West Hempstead, a hamlet in the Town of Hempstead in Nassau County, New York, has a rich history that dates back to the pre-colonial era. Originally inhabited by the Rockaway Indians, the area was later settled by the Dutch and English in the mid-17th century. The name "Hempstead" is derived from the English town of Hemel Hempstead, and the prefix "West" was added to distinguish it from the neighboring Hempstead Village.

In the 19th century, West Hempstead began to transform from a rural farming community into a suburban area. The arrival of the Long Island Rail Road in 1893 played a significant role in this development, making it easier for residents to commute to New York City and attracting more people to the area. The post-World War II era saw a housing boom, with many veterans settling in the newly built suburban neighborhoods.

Today, West Hempstead is known for its diverse population, excellent schools, and community-oriented atmosphere. It boasts various parks, including the serene Halls Pond Park, and a bustling commercial district along Hempstead Turnpike. The hamlet continues to attract individuals and families looking for a suburban lifestyle with convenient access to urban amenities.

For those living in or considering a move to West Hempstead, the hamlet's history is a testament to its enduring appeal as a place of growth, community, and opportunity.
