History of Verona
Summary: A short history of Verona is provided below for residents and anyone considering moving there.
Verona, New Jersey, is a suburban township in Essex County with a rich history that dates back to before the American Revolution. Originally part of the Horseneck Tract, which was purchased in 1702 from the Lenni Lenape Native Americans, the area that is now Verona was used for farming and remained largely rural for over a century.
During the Revolutionary War, the area saw skirmishes and troop movements, as it was situated between the American forces in Morristown and the British in New York. The early 19th century brought industrialization, with the construction of a dam and mill on the Peckman River, which encouraged further settlement and development.
In 1892, Verona was officially incorporated as a borough, separating from Caldwell Township. However, it was not until 1907 that Verona became an independent township. The early 20th century saw significant growth as trolley lines and later automobiles made commuting to Newark and New York City easier, transforming Verona into a suburban community.
Today, Verona maintains a small-town charm while offering a range of amenities and a strong sense of community. Its history is preserved in landmarks such as the Verona Park, a 54-acre county park designed by the Olmsted Brothers, and the Verona Civic Center, which houses the town hall and library. For residents and those considering moving to Verona, the township offers a blend of historical roots and modern living.
