History of Vernon
Summary: Here is a brief history of Vernon for both residents, viistors, or anyone considering moving there.
Vernon, Connecticut, a town with a rich history, is nestled in Tolland County and offers a unique blend of past and present for its residents and those considering making it their home. The area that is now Vernon was originally part of Bolton. It was incorporated as a separate town in 1808 and named after George Washington's Mount Vernon estate.
The early economy of Vernon was largely agricultural, with many small farms dotting the landscape. However, the Industrial Revolution brought significant change to the area. The Hockanum River provided water power for mills, and by the 19th century, Vernon had become a hub for textile manufacturing. The Rockville area of Vernon, in particular, flourished with the Rock Mill being a notable establishment, and the town experienced a period of rapid growth and prosperity.
As the textile industry waned, Vernon adapted, transitioning to a more diversified economy. Today, it is a suburban community with a population of approximately 30,000 people. The town has managed to preserve much of its historical charm through landmarks such as the New England Civil War Museum and the Vernon Historical Society, which are testaments to its rich heritage.
Vernon continues to honor its past while looking towards the future, offering residents a blend of historical sites, modern amenities, and a strong sense of community. Its schools, parks, and local businesses contribute to the high quality of life enjoyed by those who live there, making Vernon not just a place with history, but a place to call home.
