History of Valley Stream

By Betsy Burlingame

Summary: Here is a brief history of Valley Stream for both residents, viistors, or anyone considering moving there.

Valley Stream, a village in Nassau County on Long Island, New York, has a rich history that dates back to the pre-colonial era. Originally inhabited by the Rockaway Indians, the area was later settled by Dutch and English colonists in the 1640s. The name "Valley Stream" is attributed to the topographical appearance of the area—a "valley" that streams run through, which was coined by Robert Pagan, a Scottish immigrant, in 1843.

Throughout the 19th century, Valley Stream evolved from a rural farming community to a suburban village. The arrival of the South Side Railroad in 1869 spurred growth, making it easier for residents to commute to New York City. By the early 20th century, the village had become a popular residential area for those seeking a suburban lifestyle with easy city access.

Incorporated in 1925, Valley Stream saw significant residential development during the post-World War II housing boom. The village's population grew rapidly, and the community expanded with new homes, schools, and parks. Today, Valley Stream is known for its diverse population, well-regarded schools, and a variety of local amenities, including the expansive Valley Stream State Park.

For those living in or considering a move to Valley Stream, the village offers a blend of suburban tranquility and urban proximity, making it an attractive place for families and professionals alike. Its history is a testament to the American dream of growth and prosperity, and it continues to be a vibrant community with a bright future.
