History of Union

By Joshua Wood, LPC

Summary: Here is a brief history of Union for both residents, viistors, or anyone considering moving there.

Union, New Jersey, with its rich history and vibrant community, is a town that offers a unique blend of historical charm and modern convenience. Established in 1667, Union was originally part of Elizabethtown, which was one of New Jersey's earliest English settlements. The town's name is said to have been derived from the "Union" of the United New Jersey and New York militias who camped in the region during the American Revolutionary War.

Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, Union grew as an agricultural community, with many farms and orchards dotting the landscape. The arrival of the railroad in the 1830s spurred further development, making Union a convenient area for those working in nearby cities to settle. By the early 20th century, the town began to transform from a rural community into a suburban one.

In 1808, Union officially separated from Elizabeth and became its own township. The 20th century saw significant growth as the Garden State Parkway, completed in the 1950s, brought new residents and businesses to the area. Union's proximity to major cities like Newark and New York City made it an attractive location for commuters, leading to a boom in housing developments and commercial enterprises.

Today, Union is a diverse and thriving community, home to Kean University and a range of cultural and recreational facilities. Its history is preserved in landmarks such as the Caldwell Parsonage and Liberty Hall Museum, which offer residents and visitors a glimpse into the town's storied past. For those living in or considering a move to Union, the town represents a harmonious blend of historical roots and contemporary living.
