History of Trumbull

By Betsy Burlingame

Summary: It's helpful for people considering moving to Trumbull to understand it's history and how it has developed into the community it is today.

Trumbull, Connecticut, a charming town in Fairfield County, boasts a rich history that dates back to its founding in 1639. Originally a part of the town of Stratford, Trumbull was known as the "Long Hill district" and was primarily an agricultural community. It wasn't until 1797 that Trumbull officially became an independent town, named after Jonathan Trumbull, the Revolutionary War governor of Connecticut.

Throughout the 19th century, Trumbull experienced modest growth. The town's landscape was dotted with mills and farms, and the Pequonnock River provided water power for industries. The construction of the Merritt Parkway in the 1930s brought significant changes, making the town more accessible and leading to suburban development.

During the 20th century, Trumbull transformed from a rural community into a suburban enclave with the growth of residential neighborhoods. The town's population saw a substantial increase after World War II, as many families moved to the area seeking a peaceful life outside the bustling cities.

Today, Trumbull is known for its excellent schools, parks, and community facilities, making it an attractive place for families. The town maintains its historical roots with landmarks such as the Trumbull Historical Society, the Long Hill Green district, and the Old Mine Park Archeological Site, which provide residents and visitors with a glimpse into the town's past.

For those living in or considering a move to Trumbull, the town's history is a testament to its enduring community spirit and its evolution from a humble agricultural settlement to a thriving suburban town.
