History of Tolland

By Joshua Wood, LPC

Summary: A short history of Tolland is provided below for residents and anyone considering moving there.

Tolland, Connecticut, is a town steeped in history and charm, offering a glimpse into New England's past for its residents and those considering making it their home. Established in 1715, Tolland was originally part of a larger area known as the "Tolland County" and has since evolved into a community proud of its heritage.

The town's early economy was primarily agricultural, with many early settlers farming the land. As the town grew, it became a hub for travel between Boston and New York, leading to the development of inns and taverns, some of which still stand today as historical landmarks. The Tolland Green, the town's centerpiece, is surrounded by well-preserved 18th and 19th-century homes, reflecting the town's rich history.

In 1785, Tolland was designated as the county seat of Tolland County, which brought a courthouse and a jail to the town, further establishing its importance in the region. The courthouse, built in 1822, is now the Tolland County Museum, where residents and visitors can learn about the town's past.

Education has always been a cornerstone of Tolland's community values. The first public school building, the Old Tolland County Jail and Museum, was erected in 1856, emphasizing the town's commitment to learning and progress.

Today, Tolland maintains its historical character while providing modern amenities and a high quality of life. Its commitment to preserving the past, combined with a forward-looking community spirit, makes Tolland a unique and inviting place to live.
