History of Teaneck

By Joshua Wood, LPC

Summary: Whether you're considering moving to Teaneck or are already below, here is a short history to help you understand how it has evolved into the place it is today.

Teaneck, New Jersey, a vibrant suburb of New York City, boasts a rich history that dates back to its indigenous roots. The area was originally inhabited by the Lenni Lenape Native Americans, who left behind a legacy of trails and names. European settlers, primarily the Dutch, began to arrive in the 1600s, and the town's name is believed to be derived from the Dutch word "Tiene Neck," meaning "neck where there are willows."

Teaneck was officially formed on February 19, 1895, by an act of the New Jersey Legislature from portions of Englewood Township and Ridgefield Township. The township grew steadily, with the construction of the Phelps Estate in 1865 and the introduction of the West Shore Railroad in 1870, which connected Teaneck to New York City and other areas.

The 1920s brought significant development, including the establishment of Fairleigh Dickinson University in 1942, which became a cornerstone of the community. Teaneck's commitment to diversity and progress was exemplified in 1965 when it became the first community in the United States to voluntarily integrate its public schools, a move that received national attention.

Today, Teaneck is known for its diverse population, beautiful parks, and active community life. Its convenient location, just a short commute from Manhattan, makes it an attractive place for those working in the city. With a history of innovation and inclusivity, Teaneck continues to be a welcoming place for residents and newcomers alike.
