History of Stone Harbor

By Betsy Burlingame

Summary: It's helpful for people considering moving to Stone Harbor to understand it's history and how it has developed into the community it is today.

Stone Harbor, a charming borough located on Seven Mile Island in Cape May County, New Jersey, has a rich history that dates back to its founding in the late 19th century. The town was established in 1914 but its story began earlier when a large portion of the island was purchased by the South Jersey Realty Co. in 1893. The company envisioned a seaside resort that would cater to the affluent, and thus, Stone Harbor was born.

Named after an English sea captain, Stone Harbor quickly developed into a vacation destination. The early 20th century saw the construction of the Stone Harbor Inn, the first hotel in the area, and the development of the railroad, which brought visitors from Philadelphia and other cities. The town's infrastructure grew with the addition of roads, a water system, and a power plant.

Throughout the 20th century, Stone Harbor continued to flourish as a family-friendly beach resort. Its beautiful beaches, protected wetlands, and quaint downtown area attracted visitors and new residents alike. The borough's commitment to preserving its natural beauty is evident in the establishment of the Stone Harbor Bird Sanctuary in 1947, providing a haven for migratory birds and wildlife.

Today, Stone Harbor maintains its reputation as a premier Jersey Shore destination, with a tight-knit community that values its small-town charm and natural surroundings. Whether you're considering a visit or a permanent move, Stone Harbor's history is a testament to its enduring appeal as a coastal haven.
