History of South Orange

By Betsy Burlingame

Summary: A short history of South Orange is provided below for residents and anyone considering moving there.

South Orange, New Jersey, is a vibrant suburban township in Essex County with a rich history that dates back to the 17th century. Originally part of a larger area known as the "Newark Mountains," South Orange was first settled by English colonists in 1666 who were drawn to the area by its fertile land and the promise of religious freedom.

The community grew steadily and by the 19th century, it became a popular spot for wealthy New Yorkers seeking a respite from city life. The construction of the railroad in the 1830s further boosted South Orange's development, making it an attractive commuter town for those working in New York City. This period saw the construction of many of the Victorian and colonial homes that give the town its distinctive character today.

In 1869, South Orange was officially incorporated as a township, and it has since evolved into a diverse and dynamic community. The town is known for its picturesque downtown area, the South Orange Performing Arts Center, and Seton Hall University, which was established in 1856 and contributes to the town's cultural and educational landscape.

Today, South Orange continues to be a desirable place to live, offering residents a blend of suburban tranquility and urban convenience. Its rich history is preserved in the South Orange Village Center, which is listed on the State and National Registers of Historic Places, ensuring that the charm and character of South Orange will be enjoyed for generations to come.
