History of Somers

By Joshua Wood, LPC

Summary: It's helpful for people considering moving to Somers to understand it's history and how it has developed into the community it is today.

Somers, New York, is a town with a rich history that dates back to the early 18th century. Originally inhabited by the Kitchawank Native Americans, part of the Mohegan tribe, the area was later settled by European colonists. The town was established in 1788 and named Stephentown. However, confusion with another town of the same name prompted a change, and in 1808, it was renamed in honor of Captain Richard Somers, a naval hero from the First Barbary War.

The early economy of Somers was largely agricultural, with dairy farming and apple orchards being prominent. The town also played a unique role in American circus history. In the early 19th century, Hachaliah Bailey purchased an African elephant named "Old Bet," which became one of the first circus animals in the United States. This led to Somers being known as the "Cradle of the American Circus," and the elephant's influence is still celebrated today with the Elephant Hotel, a National Historic Landmark, serving as the town's historical society headquarters.

Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, Somers evolved from a rural farming community to a suburban town. Today, it is known for its excellent schools, beautiful parks, and a strong sense of community. Its historical roots are preserved in local landmarks and annual events that celebrate the town's unique heritage. For residents and those considering moving to Somers, the town offers a blend of historical charm and modern convenience, making it a desirable place to live in Westchester County.
