History of Smithtown

By Joshua Wood, LPC

Summary: Here is a brief history of Smithtown for both residents, viistors, or anyone considering moving there.

Smithtown, New York, is a town with a rich history that dates back to the 17th century. According to local legend, Smithtown was founded by Richard Smith, who, as the story goes, was granted permission to keep all the land he could encircle on his bull in one day. This tale is commemorated by the iconic "Whisper the Bull" statue located at the intersection of Route 25 and Route 25A.

The town was officially established in 1665 when Richard Smith received a patent for the land from Thomas Dongan, the colonial governor of New York. The area was initially inhabited by the Native American Nissequogue tribe, from whom the land was purchased. Smithtown originally thrived as an agricultural community, with its fertile soil providing ample resources for farming.

As the years progressed, Smithtown evolved, with the construction of mills and the introduction of industry. The 19th and 20th centuries saw significant growth as transportation improved and suburban development expanded. The Long Island Rail Road, established in the mid-1800s, played a crucial role in connecting Smithtown to New York City and other parts of Long Island, facilitating the town's growth as a desirable place to live.

Today, Smithtown is known for its excellent schools, beautiful parks, and a strong sense of community. Its historical sites, such as the Smithtown Historical Society and the Caleb Smith State Park Preserve, offer residents and visitors a glimpse into the town's storied past. For those considering moving to Smithtown, the town offers a blend of historical charm and modern amenities, making it a unique and attractive place to call home.
