History of Short Hills

By Betsy Burlingame

Summary: It's helpful for people considering moving to Short Hills to understand it's history and how it has developed into the community it is today.

Short Hills, New Jersey, is a picturesque suburban community with a rich history that dates back to the 19th century. The area, now known for its affluence and high quality of life, was originally developed by Stewart Hartshorn, an inventor and entrepreneur, who purchased the land in 1875 with the vision of creating a "harmonious community for people who appreciated nature." Hartshorn was inspired by the natural beauty of the rolling hills and lush woodlands, hence the name "Short Hills."

Hartshorn's vision was to create a planned community that was both close to nature and accessible to New York City. He established the Short Hills Park, a 155-acre space that remains a central feature of the community to this day. The area was also one of the first in the United States to be planned with commuter convenience in mind, with the Short Hills railroad station opening in 1879, providing residents with easy access to Manhattan.

Throughout the 20th century, Short Hills continued to grow and develop, with its residential architecture featuring a mix of Victorian, Colonial, and modern homes. The community has maintained its commitment to preserving green spaces and ensuring that development is in harmony with the environment. Today, Short Hills is known for its excellent schools, upscale shopping, and its status as one of the wealthiest communities in the United States. Its history as a thoughtfully designed community still resonates with residents and visitors alike, making it a desirable place to live for those who value both natural beauty and suburban convenience.
