History of Shelter Island
Summary: Here is a brief history of Shelter Island for both residents, viistors, or anyone considering moving there.
Shelter Island, nestled between the North and South Forks of Long Island, New York, is a serene and historic locale with a rich past that continues to charm residents and visitors alike. Originally inhabited by the Manhanset tribe, the island was purchased in 1652 by a group of English settlers from the Earl of Stirling. Its name is derived from its initial purpose as a "shelter" for livestock from the mainland.
Throughout the 17th and 18th centuries, Shelter Island developed as an agricultural community. The Sylvester Manor, established in 1652, stands as a testament to the island's early history, once operating as a provisioning plantation and now serving as an educational farm and historic site. The island's strategic location made it a focal point during the Revolutionary War, where it provided a haven for British troops.
The 19th century saw Shelter Island transform into a summer resort destination, attracting visitors with its natural beauty and tranquil environment. Grand hotels like the Manhanset House and Prospect Hotel catered to tourists, though they no longer stand today. The Shelter Island Heights, a community founded in 1871 by the Shelter Island Grove and Camp Meeting Association of the Methodist Episcopal Church, is now a designated historic district, showcasing Victorian architecture and the island's resort-era heritage.
Today, Shelter Island remains a unique blend of historical charm and natural beauty. With approximately one-third of the island preserved as open space, residents and newcomers are drawn to its peaceful lifestyle, community spirit, and the preservation of its storied past.
