History of Scotch Plains

By Betsy Burlingame

Summary: A short history of Scotch Plains is provided below for residents and anyone considering moving there.

Scotch Plains, New Jersey, is a town with a rich history that dates back to the late 17th century. Originally known as the Scotch Plains Plantation, the area was first settled in 1684 by Scottish Quakers and other immigrants. They were drawn to the fertile land and the promise of religious freedom in the New World. The name "Scotch Plains" is believed to have been derived from these early Scottish settlers and the area's rolling terrain.

Throughout the 18th century, Scotch Plains saw modest growth and development. The Revolutionary War brought significant events to the area, with local lore suggesting that George Washington and his troops camped nearby. The Battle of Short Hills in 1777 also took place in the region, marking Scotch Plains as a site of historical significance.

As the 19th century progressed, Scotch Plains evolved from a rural community into a more suburban one, especially with the arrival of the railroad in the 1870s. This transportation advancement made it easier for residents to commute to nearby cities for work, thus shaping the town's development as a bedroom community.

Today, Scotch Plains is known for its diverse population, excellent schools, and community-oriented lifestyle. Its historical sites, such as the Osborn Cannonball House and the Stage House Inn, serve as reminders of the town's storied past. For those living in or considering a move to Scotch Plains, the town offers a unique blend of historical charm and modern convenience.
