History of Scarsdale
Summary: It's helpful for people considering moving to Scarsdale to understand it's history and how it has developed into the community it is today.
Scarsdale, a town with a rich history, is nestled in Westchester County, New York. Its origins date back to 1666 when Caleb Heathcote, an English merchant and New York City mayor, purchased the land from the Wappinger Native American tribe. Heathcote named the area after his ancestral home in Derbyshire, England. In 1702, he was granted a royal charter, transforming his estate into the 'Manor of Scarsdale', and establishing a legacy that would evolve into the modern-day town.
Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, Scarsdale remained a quiet, rural community. The arrival of the New York and Harlem Railroad in the 19th century, however, marked a turning point, making the area more accessible and attractive to wealthy New Yorkers seeking country estates. This led to a gradual transformation from farmland to a suburban enclave.
The 20th century saw Scarsdale's development into a residential hotspot with a reputation for affluence, excellent schools, and a high quality of life. The town was officially incorporated in 1915, and its local government, a nonpartisan Village Board, reflects a commitment to maintaining the community's character and services.
Today, Scarsdale is known for its beautiful homes, green spaces, and vibrant community life. Its history is preserved in the Scarsdale Historical Society, which maintains historical landmarks such as the Cudner-Hyatt House and the Quaker Meeting House. For those living in or considering a move to Scarsdale, the town offers a unique blend of historical charm and modern suburban living.
