History of Sands Point

By Joshua Wood, LPC

Summary: A short history of Sands Point is provided below for residents and anyone considering moving there.

Sands Point is a picturesque village located at the tip of the Port Washington peninsula on Long Island's North Shore. This affluent community is known for its stunning waterfront estates and rich history that dates back to the early 17th century. Originally inhabited by the Matinecock Native American tribe, the area was first settled by European colonists in the 1640s. The name "Sands Point" was derived from the sandy cliffs that border the village's peninsula.

Throughout the 19th century, Sands Point remained largely agricultural. However, the 20th century brought significant changes as wealthy New York City residents began building grand estates on the scenic bluffs and shoreline. These estates were the epitome of luxury and opulence, often encompassing vast acres of land with sprawling gardens and private beaches.

One of the most notable residents was the celebrated author F. Scott Fitzgerald, who lived in the nearby Great Neck area and frequented Sands Point. It is believed that the village served as inspiration for the fictional East Egg in his classic novel "The Great Gatsby," which depicted the extravagant lifestyle of the Long Island elite during the Roaring Twenties.

Today, Sands Point preserves its historical charm through the maintenance of these estates, some of which have been converted into public spaces, such as the Sands Point Preserve. The Preserve includes the Guggenheim Estate and Falaise, a historic house museum. Residents and visitors alike can enjoy the area's natural beauty, cultural heritage, and the sense of tranquility that Sands Point offers, making it a desirable location for those seeking a serene lifestyle within reach of New York City.
