History of Sag Harbor

By Joshua Wood, LPC

Summary: Here is a brief history of Sag Harbor for both residents, viistors, or anyone considering moving there.

Sag Harbor, a quaint village located on the eastern end of Long Island, New York, boasts a rich history that dates back to the 17th century. Originally inhabited by the Algonquin Native American tribe, the area was first settled by Europeans in 1707. The village's name is believed to have been derived from a nearby tuber called the "sagg."

The 18th and 19th centuries saw Sag Harbor rise to prominence as a whaling port, rivalling even New York City. The wealth generated from whaling led to the construction of grand homes and public buildings, many of which still stand today. The Old Whalers' Church, an 1844 Presbyterian church, is a notable example of the village's whaling heritage.

After the decline of the whaling industry in the mid-19th century, Sag Harbor's economy diversified. It became a center for watchcase manufacturing, thanks to the establishment of the Fahys Watchcase Factory. The village also played a role in the American literary scene, with John Steinbeck among its famous residents.

Today, Sag Harbor is known for its historic charm, cultural attractions, and maritime legacy. It is a part of the Town of East Hampton and the Town of Southampton, attracting visitors and new residents alike with its unique blend of history, arts, and scenic beauty. The village's commitment to preserving its past while fostering a vibrant community spirit makes it an appealing destination for those looking to connect with American history and enjoy the allure of the Hamptons.
