Summary: A short history of Roslyn is provided below for residents and anyone considering moving there.

Roslyn, nestled on the North Shore of Long Island, is a village with a rich history that dates back to the colonial era. Originally settled in the 1630s, it was known as Hempstead Harbor. However, by 1844, the village was renamed Roslyn—a name believed to be derived from Roslin, Scotland, due to the area's topographical resemblance to the Scottish landscape.

The village's growth was significantly influenced by the grist mills established by the early settlers, which utilized the powerful Hempstead Harbor's tide. These mills were instrumental in the development of Roslyn's economy, and remnants of this milling history can still be seen at the Roslyn Grist Mill, which is one of the oldest in the country.

In the 19th century, Roslyn became a hub for industry and commerce. The Roslyn Savings Bank, established in 1876, is a testament to the village's economic prosperity during this period. The village's affluence attracted wealthy New Yorkers who built their summer homes here, contributing to the architectural diversity that includes Victorian, Colonial, and other historic styles.

Today, Roslyn is known for its picturesque setting, historic landmarks, and vibrant cultural scene. The Roslyn Landmark Society works to preserve its rich heritage, ensuring that the village's history is not forgotten. For residents and those considering moving to Roslyn, the village offers a unique blend of historical charm and modern amenities, making it a desirable place to live on Long Island.
