History of Ramsey
Summary: Here is a brief history of Ramsey for both residents, viistors, or anyone considering moving there.
Ramsey, New Jersey, is a borough with a rich history that dates back to America's early days. Nestled in Bergen County, Ramsey was officially incorporated on March 10, 1908, from portions of Hohokus Township (now Mahwah). However, its roots can be traced back to the 17th century when Dutch settlers first arrived in the area.
The region was originally inhabited by the Lenape Native Americans, who traded with the Dutch. The name "Ramsey" is believed to have been derived from a historic train station built in the 1840s, named after Peter J. Ramsey, a landowner who sold his property to the Paterson and Ramapo Railroad. The arrival of the railroad was a significant factor in the growth of the borough, as it connected Ramsey to larger markets and made it an attractive place for New Yorkers looking for a country retreat.
Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, Ramsey evolved from a rural community into a suburban town. It saw the development of schools, churches, and businesses that served the growing population. The borough's strategic location along major transportation routes continued to attract residents and contribute to its development.
Today, Ramsey is known for its small-town charm, community spirit, and historical landmarks, such as the Old Stone House, which is the oldest building in Ramsey and serves as a museum showcasing local history. For those living in or considering a move to Ramsey, the borough offers a blend of historical heritage and modern conveniences, making it a unique and desirable place to call home.
