History of Port Jefferson

By Betsy Burlingame

Summary: It's helpful for people considering moving to Port Jefferson to understand it's history and how it has developed into the community it is today.

Port Jefferson, a picturesque village on the North Shore of Long Island, has a rich history that dates back to the 17th century. Originally known as Setauket Harbor, it was renamed in 1836 after President Thomas Jefferson, reflecting the community's admiration for the third U.S. President. The area was initially settled by Europeans in the 1650s and was primarily an agricultural community due to its fertile land.

The village's location on the Long Island Sound made it an ideal spot for shipbuilding, which became a dominant industry by the 19th century. Port Jefferson's shipyards constructed a variety of vessels, from sloops to clippers, contributing significantly to the maritime history of the United States. The most famous ship built in Port Jefferson was the Mather & Woodbury, the largest vessel ever constructed on Long Island at the time.

As the 20th century approached, the shipbuilding industry declined, but Port Jefferson adapted by evolving into a thriving tourist destination and residential community. Its deepwater harbor became a focal point for transportation and recreation. Today, Port Jefferson is known for its vibrant downtown area, cultural events, and ferry service that connects Long Island to Bridgeport, Connecticut. The village's historical character is preserved in its beautiful Victorian homes and buildings, and the Port Jefferson Historical Society actively maintains this connection to the past.

For those living in or considering a move to Port Jefferson, the village offers a blend of historical charm, modern amenities, and a strong sense of community, making it a unique and desirable place to call home.
