History of Pennington

By Betsy Burlingame

Summary: Whether you're considering moving to Pennington or are already below, here is a short history to help you understand how it has evolved into the place it is today.

Pennington, New Jersey, is a small borough with a rich history that dates back to the pre-colonial era. Originally inhabited by the Lenni Lenape Native Americans, the area was later settled by the Dutch and English in the 17th century. The town was officially established in 1697, and its name is believed to have been derived from the colonial landowners, the Pennington family.

During the American Revolution, Pennington played a modest role, with local lore suggesting that General George Washington passed through the area. The town's growth was steady but slow, maintaining a rural charm that is still evident today. In the 19th century, Pennington was known for its schools, including the Pennington Seminary, which later became the Pennington School, a prestigious private institution that remains a significant part of the community.

The arrival of the railroad in the 1830s spurred economic growth, but Pennington managed to retain its small-town atmosphere. The borough was officially incorporated in 1890, and since then, it has become a desirable residential area known for its historic homes, tree-lined streets, and community-focused living.

Today, Pennington is appreciated for its blend of history and modernity, offering residents a high quality of life with a sense of connection to the past. Its downtown area, with local shops and restaurants, adds to the borough's charm, making it an attractive place for those looking to move to a community with a strong sense of identity and heritage.
