History of Pelham
Summary: A short history of Pelham is provided below for residents and anyone considering moving there.
Pelham, New York, is a suburban town located in Westchester County with a rich history that dates back to the early 17th century. The area was originally inhabited by the Siwanoy band of the Wappinger Native American tribe. European settlement began when Thomas Pell purchased the land in 1654 from the Siwanoy, an event commemorated by the historic Pell Treaty Oak, which stood until 1906.
The town of Pelham was officially established in 1788, named after Pell's great-grandson, Philip Pell, an officer in the American Revolutionary War. Throughout the 19th century, Pelham grew slowly as a rural community. The construction of the New Haven Railroad in the 1840s, however, spurred development and transformed Pelham into a more accessible and desirable location for New York City commuters.
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Pelham saw significant growth and subdivision, leading to the establishment of the villages of Pelham and Pelham Manor. The area's rich history is reflected in its architecture, with many homes and buildings dating back to the Victorian and Colonial eras, contributing to its charming character.
Today, Pelham continues to attract residents with its small-town feel, excellent schools, and close proximity to New York City. Its historical roots are celebrated by the community through preservation efforts and local events, making it a unique place to live with a deep appreciation for its past.
